Readers Love it When You Outline
how outlining helps the process, and the final product
Outlining can help the drafting process go smoother. But even better than that, it can help improve the final product for readers;
1. You’ll finish your book faster
When you have a plan, the finish line is in sight. Finishing a book within a reasonable amount of time also improves its quality—you’ll spend less time re-writing, agonizing, and overworking scenes. Steady progress gives you the satisfaction of knowing the book and characters better, and the book fuels itself.
2. You’ll write the truest, most complex scenes that you need to—and avoid deleting whole chapters
Readers can sense immediately when a narrative is treading water. They can also tell when a scene is shoehorned in, or a description is drawn out just to kill time.
When you have your own trusted outlining system, you can make each scene as focused as possible on the core experience of the book.
3. Each writing session, you’ll get to focus on the fun parts
Instead of sitting down at your computer and trying to answer the big existential questions of the book, an outline helps you focus your time and energy on the rewarding aspects of writing—going deep into the emotional turning point of a character, writing a kissing scene, or exploring a new beautiful setting.
I believe in the power of outlines, which is why I made this class.
But I also believe in giving writers the power to make their own customized outlines for their book, which is why I designed this class.
Hope to see you soon in the live cohort!
p.s. the Writer’s Year 2026 cohort is open for applications until tonight, Friday February 27.
